What is an Exterior Designer?

An exterior designer coordinates the design and installation of all exterior amenities on your property.  He designs any pools, ponds, fountains, reflecting pools and other water features, landscaping, outdoor lighting, irrigation, paths, patios, walls and fences, outdoor kitchens, garden rooms, screen enclosures and even the exterior colors and textures of your home to assure that every aspect of the exterior of your home complements the over-all design and meets the highest standards of quality and workmanship.

Who needs an Exterior Designer?

Almost anyone who is doing more than a simple landscaping job will need an exterior designer.  For example, if you are planning to add a pool you will also have to consider decking, screening or fencing and re-landscaping.  You might also want to add an outdoor kitchen at the same time.  A standard pool contractor might give you a nice pool, but will give no thought as to all the other items that must be included in the over-all design. Why can’t I just hire a landscape architect?

You can.  But a landscape architect does not design swimming pools.  The landscape architect will have to call someone else to design the pool and you will still have to oversee and coordinate all the different sub-contractors responsible for the installation of the design.

What can I expect from an Exterior Designer?

In a word:  Simplicity.  Instead of hiring a landscape architect, a pool contractor, a screen contractor, a paving contractor, an outdoor kitchen contractor, an electrician, a plumber, a landscape contractor and perhaps a general contractor to coordinate all the other contractors, you hire one person—an Exterior Designer.

How can I find an Exterior Designer?

True exterior designers are very rare.  The person must have design experience in all aspects of outdoor design.  He or she must be a pool contractor and landscape contractor and have the artistic abilities to bring a whole design together.  We recommend Lucas Congdon, President of Lucas Lagoons, Inc.
