Here is a checklist of items to consider before you add a swimming pool to your existing home.

1. Location of pool features in relation to various rooms in house.
2. Location of pool equipment in relation to existing electrical panel.
3. Location of pool in relation to existing vegetation, and effect of existing vegetation on pool design both as to shape and maintenance requirements.
4. Design of various pool areas. Waterfalls, slide, grotto, spa, beach areas, bridge, sheer descents, swimming lane and vanishing edge.
Costs and benefits of various design features.
5. Patio design in relation to house and planned use.
6. Finishes for pool interior: pebble finishes or less expensive. Costs and benefits of various finishes.
7. Decking choices. Stone, pavers, concrete decking stains and textures. Costs and benefits of various decking options.
8. Lighting both for the pool and the patio. Having the required conduit for lighting installed before the deck as needed for the lighting design.
9. Screen cage or fencing as to design, color and requirements both for use and to comply with code requirements.
10.Landscaping both the pool and deck area and the rest of the yard.
11.Does the plant selection fit the area? Is the planting selected clean and easy to maintain?
12.Has the proper irrigation conduit been installed before the decking?
13.Over-all drainage of the pool and deck area.
14.Type of sanitation system.
15.Pool over-flows and auto-fills.
16.Pathways from pool to other parts of yard or other areas.
17.When the job is completely finished will it seem fully integrated with the over-all design of the house?
18.What warrantees are given? And by whom? Whom do I call with questions after the fact?

With an Exterior Designer all of these questions will be taken into consideration along with other considerations that are particular to your location. If you are redoing the interior of you home and have hired an interior decorator, the Exterior Designer will coordinate color and texture choices with him/her to assure the overall cohesion of the design. After the project is finished any questions or warranty issues will be resolved with one phone call to one person.
